James means that his mother, who had no racial bias at all, was also colored by the way in which she was raised. Her background as a Jewish immigrant would always serve to influence her thought and actions, thus, James means that with all of what he saw as her goodness, a lot of her background remained. Examples of this would be found in the way she shopped for her children and chose their schools, as well as her worldview.
