At Jewish schools the children are seen almost as token blacks because they are poor and deal largely with black customers. The white school was hard on Ruth. Her father insisted on private tutors for Ruth to teach her "Jewish skills" like sewing and book keeping. At white school Ruth was often tormented. Kids would call her "Christ killer" and she was generally seen as different. Ruth's only salvation was a gentile girl who befriends her named Frances.
