After Ruth leaves, the family sits Shiva. Sitting Shiva is a Jewish tradition of paying respect to the dead, basically they are disowning her. Being "dead" to her family is hard on Ruth. Even though she had huge troubles growing up, her family was still her identity. When her first husband died she was broke and had eight children. She reached out to her family but they refused to help her.
