What does, "She had to die in order for me, the rest of me, to live

on page 2, Ruth says “Rachel Shilsky is dead as far as I’m concerned. She had to die in order for me, the rest of me, to live”

What is the meaning of this quote?

She means that she had to shed her old identity in order to embrace who she really was. This quote has to do with her transition from who Rachel was...... to who Ruth became. She became dead to one family, in order to live in another as a whole person.
