Ruth McBride, James's mother, brought James up through much poverty and turmoil. She instilled James with a sense of moral order to survive

Andrew McBride-Although James's father Andrew died before James was born, he gave a sense of stability and purpose the whole family. Ruth used he belief in God to help pay the bills and bring up her children.

Aunt Candis- Dennis's (Andrew's) favorite aunt, the elderly Aunt Candis traveled to New York from North Carolina to help Ruth with her eight children after Dennis passed away.
