This was a very emotionally cold home. Their father was a strict authoritarian who showed no love even when his orders were followed. Ruth hungered for love, especially from someone very different from her father. Ruth's father loathed the blacks who bought from his store. This,in part, might have been why Ruth gravitated to a black man. This union was both forbidden by the Jewish faith and offensive to her father. In his offense, Ruth found the love she needed.
