Racism

what is the difference between racism in the book and racism now in 2209.

Firstly I think you are referring to 2009. My first inclination is to say that issues of racial conflict have improved. It is now 2012 and the United States has a black president. This would have been considered preposterous and heresy (by many white folks) in Ruth's Southern home of Suffolk. That being said it would be irresponsible and foolish to say that racism in America no longer exists . Racism has just changed. I'm not an expert but I imagine that it is more understated than it used to be in James's reflections. In parts of America is still remains quite obvious and in other parts it seems more sublime. In any case, the country is far from seeing each other's blood of having the colour of water.
