In Chapter Three, Ruth shares the conflict she had with her father.... the conflict her father had with everyone. If he didn't like what his family did or said, he'd threaten to send tham back to Europe. He was cruel to her mother.... he was cruel to everyone. He had only married her mother to get to America.

Ruth also had a hard time understand Judaism. She followed the rituals and laws, but she didn't understand the reasons for them.

Lastly, Chapter three ends with Ruth's confusion over death, and her belief that her grandfather wasn't dead, only sleeping. This fear of death transitioned to a lifetime fear of being buried alive.
