Although James uses his mother's voice, he is still writing it.James weaves in and out of the two voices through the book. Rather than confusing the reader, the two narratives help us discover both these people at the same age in their lives. It is a very effective narrative technique when left in the hands of a skilled writer like James. He can intertwine the details of each character's lives in order to give us the fully developed adults at the end. I really liked it.
