She begins when she is a new college graduate looking for her first job. She gets the job because of her college roommate Annie and quickly adapts to the corporate culture of the company. The dystopian quality of a society which advocates the technology of the SeeChange camera which shows everything about a person both inside and out. It is "transparency" in the most perfect form, but ultimately takes away any privacy a person might wish for. Mae does what the company wants until she discovers that the company will only use the information about her and her family history to embarrass her and cause a kind of downfall for her.
