The Chrysanthemums

The chrysanthemums

For what possible purpose does steinbeck give us such a detailed account of Elisa's preparation for her evening out? Notice her tearing off her soiled clothes and her scrubbing her body with pumice(paragraph 93-94).

There is a lot of anticipation mixed with sexuality. Elsa feels sexually and emotionally dormant. Her preparation for her evening out personifies her latent desires.
