In the first section of the story, Henry remarks that he wishes Elisa would use her talent as a gardener in the orchards. Elisa is immediately interested, but her husband quickly brushes off the notion. He makes her feel needed, but he is obviously only making conversation that he believes will make her feel good about herself.
