The residents are under the assumption that in isolating themselves, they are attaining perfection not possible within the world around them. Unfortunately, that same isolation only serves to push them further and further away from the perfection they desire. Reproduction within an isolated community is dangerous, as shown in the mutations of the young. Killing off those bearing mutations is morally wrong.... there is no perfection in their actions.
