David falls asleep and dreams about the most recent Purification, in which a calf was slaughtered for being hairless. In David’s dnightmare , Sophie is in the place of the calf and his father slits her throat. This represents the depth of David's guilt if her were to give away Sophie's secret. The dream also foreshadows events to come.
