In chapter 12, what ironic element seems to be occurring in the book?

Well there seems to be a split between the "Jewishness" of Mr. Malter and the ultra "Jewishness" of Reb Saunders. Mr. Matler wants a Jewish homeland in Palestine and Reb thinks this is blasphemy until the Messiah comes.
