The most profound tension in chapter 1 is not necessarily the particular relationship between Reuven and Danny but the division between the two teams along religious lines. Some hurtful slurs are exchanged, and Reuven cannot help but think that Danny presumes himself to be "holier" and more mature in his Judaism. So, while it would be too quick to call their relationship sour, it is definitely one of distance and otherness.
