Jim Smiley is a legend. He lived in Angel’s Camp, Calaveras County, California in either 1849 or 1850, and he was a gambler who would bet on anything. Like most of the people who opened the way to the west, he was innovative, optimistic, and a dreamer. he never cheated, and he took advantage of the preconceived notions of others.
