Being a biological mother is only the first step, the real moral challenge is in being motherly.

Grusha is Michael's adoptive mother. She grabs him from the hands of death and spends two years loving, raising, and protecting the child his mother knowingly deserted. Without Grusha, Michael is dead. Having a child doesn't make one motherly, it doesn't make someone a mother. This is proven when Natella seeks to regain custody of the toddler in order to inherit her husband's estate. For Natella, the child is a pawn...... a means to an end. To Grusha, he is her son...... she needs nothing but the child she loves. She is his mother.
