I think what I was struck with right away was that Holden is a pretty unreliable character. He spends his days accusing various people like his brother as a phoney yet covets the very things that he dismisses. While his parents spend money to send him to private school, Holden rejects the school. Working for money, however, doesn't appeal to Holden. Holden actually looks for the very traits he detests.
