The novel's central conflict is man versus self..... the conflicted feelings Holden has within himself. On one hand, he wants to connect with adults..... embrace maturity, and most specifically, have his first sexual experience. On the other hand, he is unable to connect with anyone on an adult level because he rejects them as phonies.
