What do you think Holden's comments about the football game actually reveal about him?

I've always felt that Holden's comments are a direct result of "fitting" or not "fitting" in. He hasn't become a part of the school community, thus large, important gatherings are deemed foolish, even unnecessary. He isn't a part of the group, thus he isolates himself on the hill. Note- he's watching the game from a distance.
