Hey I have to write this essay for my english class on how Holden's feelings toward another character change. We also have to explain how his feelings have changed to one character, why they changed, and how it affects the book as a whole....
CAN ANYBODY HELP! i really need it with this assignment!!!
Holden's feelings toward Phoebe change. At the beginning he wants to protect her, be the "Catcher in the Rye" and protect her from growing up. He wants to protect her innocence as a child, and protect her from the corruption of the adult world.
By the end of the novel, Holden realizes that he can't protect her from maturing, and moreover he shouldn't:
..."All the kids kept trying to grab for the gold ring, and so was old
Phoebe, and I was sort of afraid she'd fall off the goddam horse, but
I didn't say anything or do anything. The thing with kids is, if they
want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not
say anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but it's bad if you say
anything to them."
Here Holden sees that he can not stop Phoebe from growing up and losing her innocence.
