The Canterbury Tales

what is chaucer's overall characterization of the Summoner

I need to know how Chaucer characterized them and what he thought of them.

The profession of the summoner is to issue summons for people to appear in front of the Church court, and in this the Summoner is quite unfair. The summoner is actually critical of the church's teachings. He uses his job to take bribes to get people out of the court. He is dishonest but claims he is no more dishonest than the church he works for. He has a point!
