This kind of falls in line with the yeoman being a "positive character." He is known as a "forester" or keeper of the Knight's land. He keeps his equipment in good order and is loyal to the Knight. He keeps outlaws and other bad guys away.

Chaucer says he is a proper forester. He knew the whole of woodcraft up and down.
