Our main narrator is one of Oscar's friends. As a result, we do not learn from the character's themselves. We don't know what they're actually thinking or feeling, as the narrator is repeating what he's heard. Hearing the "whole" story would require a first person narrator, or a third-person, omniscient narrator.
