    Writing as Resistance

    Kind of Activity:

    Artistic Response

    Objective:

    To understand the history of writing as a form of resistance and/or control over one's own cultural history

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.2; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.10

    Structure:

    Each student should choose and research another work of literature in which a native of a country critiques the political culture of that country. (For instance: Gulliver's Travels, 1984, Fahrenheit 451, The Hunger Games.)

    Then, have students work in groups to develop their own artistic responses to political or cultural issues, either current issues or historical ones. Their responses might take the form...
