Over the course of the novel, Joe changes from a grief filled child, to an unhappy stepchild, to a struggling teenager trying to make his own way in the world. After moving to Seattle to live with his brother, Joe's life changes immensely, and he creates his own destiny. Joe makes it into college, joins crew, and through hard work..... he makes it to the Olympics, where he and his team beat the odds and achieve an unlikely victory, defeating the German boat rowing for Adolf Hitler.
