Why does the author make Bruno a 9-year-old boy ?

I think the author wanted to explore the tragedy of the holocaust through the eyes of childhood innocence. Bruno also happens to be a sensitive empathetic boy. We experience his loss of innocence as he discovers one of the most terrible places, Auschwitz, imaginable.
