Why are Bruno and Gretel protected from the Nazis

why does their mother refuse to reveal any information from their father or the Nazis to her children?

Grandmother certainly did not approve of the Nazi party or her son's involvement. Father, being such a high-ranking official, insulated the kids from public functions, which included the Nazi Youth.
