What prompts Bruno to go downstairs to his father's study?

Bruno is prompted to go to his father's study because he wants to find out about the all the people on the other side of the fence. He sees man of all shapes and sizes, who do not seem to be family, and are all dressed the same.... Bruno believes that his father is the only one who can explain it.
