What is the impact that the characterisation of Bruno has on this story?

Bruno is young, innocent, and ignorant of the atrocities that surround him. Through Bruno, we see the way the the Nazis were able to commit these atrocities in plain sight. Even when faced with the reality of the camp, Bruno is unable to understand what is happening, and he is unable to connect his father with acts of violence or wrongdoing. Bruno's death makes the story personal..... his father's reaction connects the reality to the violence.
