The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (Chapter 6)

Why do you think John Boyne, the author, has Gretel come into Bruno's room and be rude to Maria at this point?

Gretel's entrance brings us back to reality. The conversation between Maria and Bruno gives the reader a lot to think about. Father suddenly seems human.... not simply a soldier, but a compassionate human being as well. Gretel's attitude, bossiness, and innate feeling of superiority bring us back to the story at hand and make us realize how dangerous Maria's speech has been.
