Maybe Kotler said goodbay to Bruno by case? Kotler knowed on a social level Bruno's mother and Gretel too but he didnt said goodbay to them.

I wouldn't read too much into this. Kotler's relationship with each member of Bruno's family was not a large theme in this book.
