Bruno has no understanding of Shmuel's situation and demonstrates his ignorance throughout their meetings. He asks Shmuel endless questions, which Shmuel answers directly but without malice. Even in discussions about his own father, Bruno fails to understand the implications of what Shmuel says. Bruno is an innocent, and I believe that as young as Shmuel was he tried to allow his friend to stay that way.
