Bruno's father is suspicious of Kotler based upon his father's disagreements with German leadership in 1938, the reason Bruno's father believes he really left the country. Bruno's father, on the other hand, makes Kotler very nervous, although we might interpret his incessant flirtations with the Commandant's wife and daughter as blatant disrespect.
