Shmuel's journey was forced and inhumane while Bruno's family was forced but treated well. Shmuel's family being forced from their home and into one bedroom shared with another family. His family being transported by train—as Shmuel notes, "There were too many of us in the carriages for one thing and there was no air to breathe" (12.713)—to Auschwitz. Bruno travelled in comfort.
