How are appearances important?

Appearances are important because they provide a sense of division. Uniforms speak to repect, and they also speak to derision (think Grandmother's response to Bruno's father's uniform). In the case of the "striped pajamas", we see another type of uniform, a uniform that speaks to hate and death.
