All these characters experience freedom and lack of freedom to varying degrees. Bruno certainly has more freedom than Shmuel or Maria. Shmuel has the least freedom by being licked up in a concentration camp. Maria is a Jew and only a housekeeper because of her connection to Bruno's father. Bruno has freedom to roam around but not the freedom to help his friend Shmuel or disagree with Nazi ideology.
