The mother is always depressed because of everything that is going on. Moving away and knowing that Out-With isn't a good place for children stresses her out. Plus, in the book, the mother always drinks "medicinal sherries" or alcohol. The mother is an alcoholic along with depressed because she always takes naps and you rarely see her in the book. She is a bystander because her obsession over drinking is taking her away from her children and the main events in the story.
