In Chapter Sixteen, Bruno questions Gretel about the people on the other side of the fence. She tells him they are Jews, and that they are kept on the other side so they cannot mix among everyone else. Bruno is still too young to understand what Jews are.... and thus, he is confused.

In Chapter 4 from pages 30 to 38, Bruno is asking greatal about the people and why they don't look friendly her question was where the girls, mothers, and grandmothers were because there were just boys, fathers, and grandfathers. During WW2 and the Holocaust, the men and women were separated, and later in the book, we find out that this is a concentration camp and this one is just for the men.
