Why does rosa want to appear tough and unemotional all the time?

Rosa is actually a softie, but she believes in tough love. She lived through tough times, and she agreed to take on responsibilities that could have landed her family in a lot of trouble. Mothers often feel the need to put on an unemotional front with their children. It's all about protection, both the physical and emotional well being of those a mother cares for.
