Why does Liesel decide to write about her life? Why does Max?

It's therapy for themselves. They get a cathartic feeling from expressing themselves. Also it is a written record of their life. It is full of anti-fascist ideas and ideas, once read, are bullet proof. Both write as sort of a gift to each other as well.
