Why does Death have a fascination with Liesel and the people in her life?

Death has seen a lot of people and a lot of hardship. He finds Liesel and the people in her life to be survivors. They share an empathy Jews that is quite rare at the time. DEath sees these people persevere in the midst of overwhelming obstacles yet retain what death understands as the best of humanity in the face of the worst of humanity.
