The books hold an emotional component for Liesel. She finds that her first book (a manual for gravediggers) helps her remember the death of her brother. After that, when Hans reads to her at night when she cannot sleep and when Hans teachers her to read, such reading provides her a sense of stability. No matter the context, the books/stories that become a part of her life always provide her with something beyond just the content of the books themselves.
