Wht does Liesel hope to accomplish by bringing Max gifts while he's ill? What sorts of items does she bring?

Liesel wanted to do something, anything to help Max out of his coma. She felt, for example, that if she read to him, something might waken his conscious. It also gave Liesel hope that Max might get better. She also brought him snow to experrience the elements outside.
