What was the meaning shown in the open credits?

I assume that you are referring to the 2013 movie adaptation. As far as I recall the opening credits are scenes uses to fill in information that we read in the book. The train trip, Liesel's dead brother, Death's monologue....are all squeezed into the opening credits to cut down the running time of the movie.Sorry, I don't see the existential part.
