What is the irony in the statement, "It kills me sometimes, how people die"

I think Death is being a little ironic/sarcastic here. Death is already dead, he embodies death! In this case Reinhold Zucker dies after forcing Hans to swap seats with him. This inadvertently ends up saving Hans's life. Death isn't so sad about Reinhold Zucker.
