What is Liesel's greatest obstacle in the story?

Death says Liesel was a girl "with a mountain to climb."

Man, there were so many obstacles for this girl, it is difficult to name just one. I think a big one was teaching herself to read and write. One of the biggest themes in this story is Liesel's capacity to express herself. Reading and writing give her beautiful but often horrible world meaning. Her literacy gives the novel its meaning.
