Max is wracked with anguish and guilt over leaving his family to save himself. Max also hated being dependent on others, especially those he cared about. The scrappy young man knew his presence in the Hubermann house was putting the family in danger. He felt both guilt and shame for leaving his family and causing danger to another one.
