Max is a Christ Figure. He takes on the sins of others. He stays in the Huberman basement ready to sacrifice his life at a moments notice. He even leaves the safety of their house to spare their lives. The Hubermans don't succumb to temptation by giving Max away. Max is very Christ -like to Liesel. He teaches her much about life in his gentle indirect way.
